Drawing inspiration from art history,
my aim is to craft sculptures that
embody a contemporary sensibility,
focusing on the ordinary and everyday
experiences. While I seek themes and
subjects from life itself rather than
books or museums, looking at great
art, both contemporary and historical,
ignites my imagination and pushes me
to enhance my craft. The artists today
very often do not do the actual work
themselves, but rather prefer to have
others, meaning artisans or machines,
make the work. I f ind that absurd, to
me nothing is more inspiring than the
work itself.
Your works "Down" represents
marble pillowcases and got viral. It
challenges the viewer, combining
softness and hardness. What
inspired you?
In the morning light I one day thought
my pillow looked like marble. The
pillow is there in your most private
and intimate moments, present from
conception to death. Some of life's
saddest and most beautiful moments
are spent on a pillow. To me that
makes it the perfect memento mori, a
metaphor of life itself.
