HÅKON ANTON FAGERÅS IS A
NORWEGIAN SCULPTOR LIVING IN
TUSCANY, ABLE TO MAKE MARBLE
ALIVE. WE INTERVIEWED HIM FOR ML
WORLD MAGAZINE TO DISCOVER HIS
ART AND CREATIVITY.
What’s your relationship with
marble?
Fragility has been one of the common
denominators of much of my work,
and the lightness and the subtle
nuances of shadows of the Statuario
marble perfectly captures these
expressions. But my appreciation for
marble goes beyond its appearance;
I value the process of carving just as
much as the f inal aesthetic outcome.
I enjoy the work itself, the slow process
of continuously trying to improve the
sculpture and master the craft
What kind of marble do you use for
your sculptures?
Ever since I f irst came to Pietrasanta
almost 25 years ago the white marble
from the Apuan alps has been my
preferred material for sculpture
Frequently using the warm white
Statuario marble I also work with
various types of ordinario marble,
depending on the subject, but also on
the availability. The beautiful pieces
of stone can be surprisingly diff icult
to f ind, and expensive of course, but
the quality of the stone matters a lot
to me. I have made a deliberate choice
to retain some of the most beautiful
stones I have sculpted for my personal
collection, not because I'm so satisf ied
with what I've made, but rather due to
my admiration for the beauty of these
stones. I collaborate closely with Marco
Giannoni, a marble artisan based in
Pietrasanta, he's an invaluable asset
to me, always on the lookout for those
rare, perfect pieces.
Have you experimented other
natural stones
Yes I have made some sculptures in
Travertine and appreciate the grey
Bardiglio marble very much And
I would love to test more kinds of
